Emily had been counting the days for nearly eight months.
Every morning before school, she crossed another number off the calendar hanging in her bedroom.
Her father was a soldier stationed overseas, and today was finally the day he was supposed to come home.
She woke up before sunrise, too excited to sleep.
With markers and colored paper, she made a welcome sign that read:
“Welcome Home, Dad!”
Her mother drove her to the airport that afternoon.
The terminal was crowded with travelers, families, and airport staff.
Emily stood near the arrival gate clutching her sign tightly.
Every time the doors opened, her heart raced.
But each time, it was someone else.
An elderly couple reunited.
A businessman hugged his children.
Friends laughed as they greeted one another.
Minutes felt like hours.
The crowd grew smaller.
The arrival board changed.
Still no sign of her father.
Emily’s smile slowly faded.
“What if something happened?” she whispered.
Her mother tried to reassure her, but worry filled the little girl’s eyes.
Eventually, she lowered her sign and stared at the floor.
Maybe he had missed his flight.
Maybe he wasn’t coming today.
Then she heard a voice behind her.
**”Miss me?”**
Emily froze.
She knew that voice.
Slowly, she turned around.
There he was.
Wearing his military uniform.
Standing only a few feet away.
For a second she couldn’t move.
Then she dropped the sign and sprinted toward him.
Her father knelt down just in time to catch her as she leaped into his arms.
Tears streamed down both of their faces.
Around them, strangers stopped to watch.
Some smiled.
Others wiped away tears of their own.
After months apart, father and daughter were finally together again.
As they walked out of the airport hand in hand, Emily looked up and said,
**”I knew you’d come back.”**
Her father squeezed her hand and smiled.
**”I promised, didn’t I?”** ❤️
