Michael couldn’t wait to get home.<\/p>\n
He had stopped on the way to buy a bouquet of red roses for his pregnant wife, Sarah. She had spent the entire day baking a beautiful white wedding cake to celebrate their first wedding anniversary. Michael knew how excited she was to surprise him.<\/p>\n
As he walked through the front door of their beautiful suburban home, he was smiling.<\/p>\n

“I just wanted tonight to be special.”<\/p>\n
Michael took a slow step toward his mother.<\/p>\n
“Mom…”<\/p>\n
She smiled confidently.<\/p>\n
“I expected you to understand.”<\/p>\n
Instead, he looked at her with disbelief.<\/p>\n
“Did you really make my pregnant wife kneel on the floor?”<\/p>\n
Margaret didn’t answer immediately.<\/p>\n
Finally, she shrugged.<\/p>\n
“Someone had to teach her a lesson.”<\/p>\n
Michael couldn’t believe what he was hearing.<\/p>\n
Sarah wasn’t crying because of a broken cake.<\/p>\n
She was crying because someone she had tried to respect had humiliated her in her own home.<\/p>\n
He walked past his mother and knelt beside Sarah.<\/p>\n
Very gently, he helped her to her feet.<\/p>\n
“You should never have had to clean this,” he said softly.<\/p>\n
Sarah burst into tears.<\/p>\n
“I thought you’d believe her.”<\/p>\n
Michael shook his head.<\/p>\n
“I believe you.”<\/p>\n
He wrapped his arms around her carefully, protecting both her and their unborn baby.<\/p>\n
Then he turned back toward his mother.<\/p>\n
“This house is supposed to be a place where my family feels safe.”<\/p>\n
Margaret’s confident expression began to fade.<\/p>\n
“If you can’t treat Sarah with kindness and respect, you can’t stay here.”<\/p>\n
The household staff quietly lowered their eyes.<\/p>\n
No one spoke.<\/p>\n
Margaret realized her son had made his choice.<\/p>\n
Without another word, she picked up her purse and walked toward the front door.<\/p>\n
When it closed behind her, the house became peaceful again.<\/p>\n
Michael looked down at the ruined cake.<\/p>\n
“It was beautiful,” he said.<\/p>\n
Sarah gave a small, emotional smile.<\/p>\n
“It was supposed to be our surprise.”<\/p>\n
He squeezed her hand.<\/p>\n
“The cake can be replaced.”<\/p>\n
He gently rested his hand on her growing baby bump.<\/p>\n
“But you and our child never will.”<\/p>\n
Together, they left the broken cake behind and walked into the kitchen.<\/p>\n
For the first time that day, Sarah felt something stronger than sadness.<\/p>\n
